Embryo transfer is a simple process in Vitro fertilization. Often it is considered to be the easiest and last step of the IVF process. The intent of embryo transfer is to improve the conception following fertilization from the in vitro fertilization procedure.
Normally in this process the embryos are placed into the uterus of a female with an intention to establish a pregnancy.
It is most often done on outpatient basis. Even though some women wish to use mild sedative, In such case no anesthesia is required. Normally the patient lies on the table or on the bed with her feet in stirrups . The doctor exposes the cervix by using the vaginal spectrum. This process has to be done with greater care and it usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. At times with the guidance of ultrasound this procedure is done. This ensure a proper placement of the embryos in the uterine cavity. Few hours of bed rest is advised by most of the doctors after this procedure.
A good quality of embryo will have 4 to 8 cells of equal and clear cytoplasm, and with few fragments which are called A grade embryos. The embryos with more fragments are normally low in grade for which the implanting chances are very low. Once the implant is done successfully the babies which are the results of the implant are normal.
The most difficult decision taken for IVF patient is, how many embryos to be transferred. The chances of the patient getting pregnant is more if more embryos are transferred. However there is a risk involved in this is it increase multiple pregnancy as well.
